Sony files lawsuit against seller of PS4 with jailbreak and illegal games
Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a lawsuit against a California man suspected of copyright infringement. He sold PlayStation 4 consoles with modified firmware and illegally downloaded games.
The man sold jailbroken PS4s under the name ‘blackcloak13’ via eBay. Sony’s San Mateo facility had purchased two PS4s from the suspect for $500 each. According to the establishment, “the consoles worked as advertised.” The console gave access to at least sixty illegally obtained games.
A document from the California court that TorrentFreak obtained states that the man offered via his website to remove the protection of PS4s against playing illegal games. He has offered these services for various consoles since 2006. On his website, he encourages visitors to “stop buying games” and states that he sells modified consoles through eBay. Sony is demanding an unknown compensation from the suspect.
The PS4 has long resisted the arrival of pirated games, but at the end of December last year hackers discovered a kernel exploit for firmware version 4.05, after which games running on this version appeared.
