Modder makes battle royale mode for 1994’s Doom II
After the success of PUBG and Fortnite, more and more games are getting a battle royale mode. Sure, Battlefield and Call of Duty couldn’t stay away, but what about Doom? The reboot does not have such a mode yet, but through a mod Doom II from 1994 does get it.
The mod is called DooM Royale (with Cheese) and the principle is as simple as other battle royale games: players are brought together in an area and have to shoot each other until there is one winner left. In the mod for Doom, the battle is not for a chicken dinner but for the Royale with Cheese.
Bambamalicious, the name of the modder that brings battle royale to Doom II, has set up a test server so enthusiasts can get started. There are always eight bots present, so there is something to shoot. The maker says he can’t promise everything will run smoothly, it’s still an early test of the gameplay.
In the coming weeks, the test server will remain available while the modder fixes bugs and works on the map. The battle royale mode takes place in an existing level, but all doors can be opened without a key. The area gets smaller and smaller as the game progresses.
To play DooM Royale, Zandronum 3.0 is required, which is a port of the Doom engine that offers more multiplayer options. Players must also own the doom2.wad game file, which can be obtained from the original CDs or from Steam, gog and the Humble Store.
