2 Hours of 4k60 Footage GoldenEye Remaster for Xbox 360 Releases Online
A YouTube user uploaded 2 hours of 4k60 footage of the GoldenEye 007 remaster to YouTube. Developer Rare once had it in the works for the Xbox 360 and the game has been leaked via the Xbox 360 Partnernet. The uploader states that the game may be put online in 2021.
The two hours of footage shows all the single player levels the game has to offer, played on 00 Agent difficulty, with a controller. This is followed by images of the game’s well-known split-screen multiplayer. The game runs on an Xbox 360 emulator, which allows for the 4k60 setting.
If the game gets a release, it won’t be through official channels. It has been known for some time that a remaster of GoldenEye is virtually impossible to release because the parties that own the rights to it do not want to cooperate. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer called “challenging” the situation in 2015 and stating that they “always gave up” on this front. It is not clear why Microsoft subsidiary Rare had a remaster in development. Ars Technica published an extensive piece on that question in 2019.
The uploader, Graslu00, insists that he is not the one who really has his hands and can release this leaked build. “It’s not up to me, I can’t release it. I can only record footage. I’ve been told the game will eventually be released, possibly in 2021.” It is not stated for which platform that game would be released, but it will probably be in the form of a ROM that can be played with an emulator or a modded Xbox 360.
The original GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 was a very popular game at the time. Despite the challenging controls and mediocre performance, the first-person shooter was a success, due to its entertaining single player campaign and multiplayer mode that could be played in split screen with up to four players. An XBLA remaster has been released of the spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark.
Update, 7:21 PM: The article stated that it was not known on which platform these images were taken, but that is the Xenia emulator, which can run on Windows, Linux and macOS.
