Google will not unveil its own smartwatch at least this year
Despite rumors that have been circulating for months, including via well-known smartphone lover Evleaks, Google will not reveal its own smartwatch in 2018. The tech giant confesses this in an interview with tech site Tom’s Guide.
In addition to the rumors about a Google smartwatch, Google renamed Android Wear to Wear OS in March and earlier this month Wear OS received an update that gave Google Assistant a prominent place in the interface. These developments in the otherwise quiet area of Android smartwatches could also suggest that the rumors are correct and that these developments are an advance towards a Google smartwatch.
According to Tom’s Guide, Google will focus on improving the Wear OS and partnering with third parties that make smartwatches, such as Casio, Fossil and Skagen. The company states that developments in this area are not yet advanced enough to bring a type of smartwatch to the market that benefits everyone, which Google would like. It is also working on an update for Wear OS that should improve battery life. That update should be released early in 2019.
In addition to the rumors about a Pixel Watch, plenty of rumors about the Pixel 3 have also surfaced online. It seems very likely that it will be revealed during Google’s upcoming presentation, which according to Bloomberg will take place on October 9 in New York.
