Developers who create Android apps for the Play Store will be required to enable two-factor authentication on their developer accounts later this year. Developers will also have to pass on their address details to Google in the future.

Developers can now submit their account type, which allows developers to indicate whether their account is personal or belonging to an organization. Google reports that this will remain optional for the time being, but that developers will have to indicate their account type from Tuesday when they want to change their contact information.

From August, Google will also make this mandatory when creating new Google Play developer accounts. At the same time, the company is making two-factor authentication mandatory for such new accounts. “Later this year” will also require all existing Play Store developers to confirm their account type and address details and activate 2fa.

Google will also ask developers to confirm their address. Currently, Google only asks for an email address and phone number when creating a developer account, but in the future address details will also be required for all Play Store developers.

Google reports that it is introducing this requirement to ensure that every developer account is created by a real person. Google reports that the company does not make developer contact details public, but that they are only used for identity verification and communication with developers.
