Fans Release Lord of the Rings Mod for Age of Empires II
The developers of ToME-Team have released a downloadable version of Tales of Middle-Earth. This is a modification of the game Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, where the game world is transformed into a world of The Lord of the Rings.
Tales of Middle Earth was in production for six years and is now nearly complete; a fully playable version is available for download on Mod Database. The mod has a total of eighteen zones from Middle-Earth, including the areas of the Elves, Rohirrim, and Mordor. The team has designed more than a hundred different buildings, as well as a number of wonders based on famous places, such as Barad-dûr.
Players can recreate the battles and stories from the world of The Lord of the Rings. There are many different buildings and all factions have their own visual style. There is an economy and ships can also be fought on the water. Furthermore, players can research technology to become stronger and diplomatic choices can be made per faction. The mod can be played as a multiplayer or single player game, or in the form of scenarios.
The mod by ToME-Team is for the game Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. This is an expansion that came out in 1999 for Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. Tales of Middle Earth is the game’s first fully playable ‘total conversion’, according to the makers. The developers also confirmed on Mod Database that a Steam Workshop version of the mod for Age of Empires II HD is in the works.
There is also another promising Lord of the Rings mod in the works, from the game Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth. Called The Battle for Middle-Earth: Reforged, this mod will be created in the Unreal Engine 4 and will basically be a brand new game. The developers want to include destructible terrain and support for 4k resolutions, among other things. This will mainly be a multiplayer game, of which a first playable version should be released sometime in early 2019.
