In Android P, Google adds official support for screens with a notch. A developer blog shows that there is also support for screens with two notches, top and bottom. More than two notches are not allowed.

The Android developer blog reports that Google imposes a number of requirements on smartphone manufacturers when it comes to notches. One is that a screen can have a maximum of two notches and they must be on the top and bottom. A screen must not have more than two notches and they must not be on the sides. Furthermore, there should only be one notch per short side.

That Android P will receive support for screens with a notch was already known when the new operating system was announced. That there is also support for multiple notches is new information. It is not clear whether there are already manufacturers working on smartphones with two notches.

So far, only smartphones have come out with one notch, at the top of the screen. Android 8, where such devices now run, does not officially support notches yet, but manufacturers can make adjustments themselves to make it work properly. In theory, therefore, smartphone manufacturers can also make phones with more than two notches.
