Data from car manufacturers was freely accessible through unprotected backup

A security researcher has found unsecured data belonging to several car manufacturers and Level One employees on a Level One Robotics and Controls backup server. The leak has now been repaired.

The researcher, Chis Vickery, shared his findings with The New York Times. He says that the server was not protected with a password or other form of authentication. Anyone who managed to find the server could download the data.

According to Vickery, the data consisted of 157GB of data, including blueprints from many automakers, including Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Tesla, Toyota and Volkswagen. In addition, personal information of Level One employees could be found, such as their driver’s licenses. There were even NDAs on the backup, indicating that the information on the backup was sensitive.

It is not clear whether malicious parties also had access to the information. Vickery notified Level One of the leak last week, and the company took the data offline within a day.
