Skype gets support for call recording

Microsoft has announced version 8.0 of its chat software Skype. One of the new features in the desktop version is call recording, including video. Support for version 7.0 of Skype ends in September.

Microsoft writes in the announcement: “Conversation recording is completely cloud-based and once someone starts recording, all participants will be notified that the call is being recorded so there are no surprises.” During recording, the video image and any shared screens are also recorded. Another feature is private conversations, where users can choose to encrypt conversations with end-to-end encryption based on the Signal protocol, which also underpins WhatsApp and Signal.

Other additions include read receipts, the ability for mentions by combining a name with an ‘@’. Furthermore, it is possible to share files up to 300MB with each other and there will be a media gallery for chats, in which shared files such as images and videos can be found.

Finally, Microsoft says it will no longer support Skype Classic, which is version 7.0, after September 1. It therefore recommends users to perform an update.
