Mozilla to recommend vetted Firefox extensions

Mozilla will soon launch a Recommended Extensions program for Firefox. The organization will emphatically put forward extensions that meet certain requirements in the field of security and user experience.

When vetting extensions, Mozilla employees check, among other things, whether the add-on is good at what it promises to do. “For example, there are a lot of ad blockers, but not all ad blockers are equally effective,” Mozilla gives as an example. In addition, the organization looks at the ease of use of the settings and the design. Security also plays a role, and once an extension is on the Recommended list, Mozilla rechecks it with each new update.

Only add-ons that are relevant to the general Firefox user base are eligible for the Recommended Extensions program, not extensions that target niches. Extensions that pass the tests receive increased visibility on Mozilla sites and addons.mozilla.org.

At the end of June, Mozilla will start implementing the first changes to addons.mozilla.org. In the summer, the organization will then expand the list of recommended extensions and eventually it should consist of several hundred, it is expected.
