AMD to release Threadripper 2 with up to 32 cores in Q3

AMD demonstrated its second-generation Threadripper processors at its keynote address at Computex. The top model gets 32 cores and can work on 64 threads. The new generation works on current motherboards with TR4 socket and will be released in the third quarter.

AMD announced Threadripper 2 and demonstrated the 32-core model at its press conference in Taipei. The company did not yet disclose prices, clock speeds and other details during the presentation, but AnandTech is able to report based on the released slide deck that both the 24- and 32-core model are clocked at 3.0GHz as standard, with a turbo for the time being. to 3.4GHz. This could be changed at the time of release. Both CPUs get a TDP of 250W. AMD indicates that the Threadripper 2 processors will hit the market in the third quarter: previous rumors point to August.

The model with 32 cores is made up of four dies and that also applies to the models with fewer cores. In a demonstration with Blender against Intel’s Core i9-7980XE with 18 cores, the Threadripper 2 with 24 cores rendered its image in 29 seconds, compared to about 38 seconds for the Intel processor.

Threadripper 2, like Ryzen 2, is built from Zen+ cores, which are made on GlobalFoundries’ 12nm+ process. Like Ryzen 2, Threadripper 2 gets support for flexible and higher turbos. The second-generation Threadripper will work on existing Threadripper motherboards via a BIOS update.
