Rumor: Google will stop Spotify competitor Play Music this year
According to a new rumor, Google would like to stop its streaming service Play Music this year. Users should switch to YouTube Remix, the yet to be launched streaming service from Google’s video site.
An anonymous Google employee tells DroidLife that the search giant will stop Play Music at the end of this year. The streaming service has been around for several years now and competes with Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer, among others. It is unknown how many paying users Google Play Music currently has.
The arrival of YouTube Remix is no secret, because a top executive of Google spoke openly about it last month. Google has not yet announced the service, so it is unknown what Remix will offer, how much it will cost and whether it will be available in the Benelux. Play Music is currently available in the Benelux and costs 9.99 euros per month.
Google does not confirm or deny the rumor. The company says in a response that it has merged the teams of YouTube Music and Google Play. “Music is important to Google, so it’s critical that we have a subscription that meets the needs of consumers and artists. Nothing changes for users right now and we’ll let you know in time before we change things.”
