Google adds two-factor authentication notification to Gmail for iOS

Google is adding the notification asking if users on another device are trying to sign in to Gmail for iOS. Until now, the window only appeared in the Google app for iOS, but it’s presumably on fewer iPhones and iPads.

The addition will allow iOS users to set up two-factor authentication on their Google account without installing the Google app, the search giant reports. In this way, Google hopes to convince more people to set up the extra security. The feature to use two-factor authentication with a window in the Google app has been working since last year.

Two-step authentication ensures that user accounts are less easy to take over. Less than 10 percent of Gmail users had the extra form of security turned on in January. In addition to the window, users can also opt for other second factor logins, such as the Google Authenticator app for iOS and Android.
