Sega launches mini version of the Mega Drive
Sega has announced that it is releasing a modern version of the Mega Drive. This new Mega Drive Mini will be released in honor of the console’s thirtieth anniversary and will feature an unknown number of games on board.
The company made this known during the Sega Fes 2018 event, as reported by Kotaku, among others. The mini version of the Mega Drive should be released in Japan sometime this year, but Sega has not yet released any details. The original Mega Drive was released in Japan in October 1988, so a fall release seems likely. Whether and when the European release is planned is also uncertain.
It is also possible that the retro console will be given a different name, because according to Sega it is not yet fixed. A number of classic Mega Drive games will be built in, but it is not yet known which ones, and how many there will be.
Furthermore, Sega will release some of its classic games for the Nintendo Switch. These include Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder Force 4 and Phantasy Star. Games are also coming out for Android and iOS.
Earlier, the company AtGames already came up with a new, compact version of the Mega Drive. Sega issued a license for this, and this device also came with a number of games pre-installed. It is also possible to put in the original cartridges, although AtGames does not guarantee that they all work.
