Facebook’s major outage was due to server configuration changes
The major outage that Facebook and its subsidiary services faced for many hours was the result of a server configuration change. Facebook reports to have fixed the problem on Thursday.
The company’s systems are recovering after the problem has been resolved, reports Facebook on Twitter. In a response to this, many users report that they still receive error messages when logging in, indicating that the fix does not have any immediate effect. The company does not provide more details about the cause than ‘a change of server configuration’.
On Wednesday evening, the problems started, leading to login errors for millions of users of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. The problems lasted for many hours. Instagram left managed to get back after a few hours, also via Twitter, but also with this report many users made it clear that this was not yet the case for them. Last November, Facebook also had a major outage.
Competitor Telegram claims to have added three million new users in one day, which would be due to the Facebook outage. Last year, Telegram had 200 million users. The company has not yet released more recent figures.
