Cat S61 smartphone has laser meter and air quality sensor in addition to thermal camera
The British Bullit Group has presented the Cat S61 smartphone. In addition to the Flir camera, which is also in the S60, the device now has a moisture meter, laser meter and air quality meter. The device will cost 899 euros.
Bullit has upgraded the Flir camera on the device from the S60 from two years ago. It will also be possible to livestream thermal images via the phone’s internet connection. The camera can detect temperatures from -20 to 400 degrees Celsius.
The resolution of the flir image goes from 640×480 to 1280×720 pixels. It is not clear how high the resolution of the flir sensor itself is. In the predecessor this was 80×60 pixels, it may have been increased to 160×120. The rear camera itself has a resolution of 16 megapixels and the front camera has an 8-megapixel resolution.
The air quality meter is from Sensirion and can detect an excess of hazardous substances indoors, such as residues of paint and glue. The sensor also measures and keeps track of the humidity and temperature of the air. The S61 has a laser on board to serve as a laser meter. The laser can measure distances of up to ten meters, the manufacturer claims.
The smartphone has a 5.2″ LCD with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The screen can be operated with wet fingers and gloves. The device has an aluminum frame for extra strength; Bullit claims that the device will fall survives up to 6 feet on concrete and is MIL Spec 810G certified and has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The soc is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630, which is normally found in midrange phones. The 630 has eight Cortex A53 cores and an Adreno 508 GPU, assisted by 4GB of memory. The storage is 64GB. The device supports 4G with a maximum download speed of 600Mbit/s. The battery has a capacity of 4500mAh. Charging is via a USB-C port. A 3.5mm jack is available for audio.
The phone will come with Android 8 Oreo and will be upgraded to Android P when the new version of the operating system is available. Bullit Group will release the Cat S61 in the spring for a suggested retail price of 899 euros.
