Teardowns show internal layout Apple Homepod speaker

Teardowns of the Apple Homepod have appeared. The speaker, which appeared in the United States this weekend, has the Apple A8 soc on the top, just above the subwoofer. The tweeters are on the bottom.

Apple has refrained from using proprietary screws on the Homepod and uses regular torx screws, iFixit writes. However, that turned out to be one of the few bright spots, because otherwise the experts at the site did not figure out how to open the Homepod without breaking it. The screws didn’t seem to loosen the elements. YouTube channel What’s Inside also used less subtle methods to open the Homepod.

The outside of the speaker appears to be fairly removable. At the top are LEDs with a layer in between to spread the light. The Apple A8 socket on which the speaker runs can also be found at the top. In addition, 16GB of flash storage can be seen in the photos. The subwoofer sits at the top, while the tweeters have their own compartments at the bottom. They receive power through the screw caps.

According to iFixit, durability shouldn’t be an issue with the Homepod; it is built like a tank, according to the repair site. In addition, it seems difficult to impossible to repair if something breaks inside.

The Homepod was released in the United States this weekend, with a release in other countries to follow in the spring. The speaker costs $349 in the US. Converted and including VAT, that would currently be around 345 euros.
