Microsoft releases 64-bit version of OneDrive sync client

Microsoft is making the 64-bit version of OneDrive available for all 64-bit variants of Windows. The updated sync client architecture should provide a faster sync speed compared to the current 32-bit version.

The 64-bit version of OneDrive is available to users with a 64-bit version of Windows 7, 8, or 10 and an x64 processor. The OneDrive client is automatically updated to the latest version. According to WindowsCentral, the updated version of OneDrive looks exactly the same as the 32-bit variant. There is not yet a 64-bit version for systems with an ARM64 processor.

The renewed sync client for OneDrive should provide speed gains, especially when synchronizing large amounts of files and large data files, Microsoft made clear earlier. Because of the architecture of 64-bit software, a program like OneDrive can access more memory from a compatible system, which should speed up the performance of a task like syncing data to the cloud.

Microsoft released a preview version of the 64-bit sync client in April of this year. In the meantime, it has been more than 14 years since OneDrive was released, although the synchronization service was then still called Windows Live Folders. A few years earlier, the first version of a Windows operating system with 64-bit architecture was introduced.
