The market for 2-in-1 laptops such as the Microsoft Surface Pro is no longer growing fast. That has been calculated by analyst firm IDC. The number of 2-in-1s delivered increased by 24 percent in 2016, compared to 1.6 percent in 2017.

According to IDC, which refers to the category as “detachables,” the lack of growth was due to the postponement of new products like Microsoft’s Surface tablets. However, new iPad Pro models appeared mid-year, which IDC places in the same category.

The 2-in-1s still make up a small part of the total tablet market. 13 percent of all tablets delivered were 2-in-1, IDC estimates. In the period from October to December 2017, manufacturers delivered a total of 6.5 million units of 2-in-1s. In total, tablets accounted for nearly fifty million deliveries.

Apple is and remains the market leader in the field of tablets. Amazon has gained more market share with its Fire tablets. Deliveries increased from 5.2 million copies in the last months of 2016 to 7.7 million at the end of 2017.
