“Microsoft stops offering Windows 10 S as a ‘standalone’ version”

Microsoft seems to be stopping offering Windows 10 S, the stripped-down version of the operating system, as a standalone product. Instead, the ‘regular’ versions of Windows 10 get a built-in S Mode.

That was discovered by Microsoft insider Paul Thurrott, who reported about it on his website. According to sources at Microsoft, all versions of Windows 10 will receive a so-called S Mode, and this should be the replacement for Windows 10 S, which is currently an operating system that is offered separately. This change should happen with the upcoming Redstone 4 update.

Microsoft started offering Windows 10 S last year, marketing it as a stripped-down version of the operating system primarily aimed at installing on cheaper hardware due to its lower system requirements. The S version only runs applications from the Windows Store. An upgrade to the regular version of Windows 10 is possible.
