Open source analytics software Piwik renames itself to Matomo
The open source analytics project Piwik has announced that it will now be known as Matomo. There are no major changes associated with the name change; the project is only announcing that a major 4.0 release is coming this year.
In the announcement of the change, Matomo writes that the reason for the change is that the new name is not shared by other companies. It most likely refers to the Piwik Pro service. This concerns an organization that, according to Matomo, is not related. Piwik Pro focuses on businesses with its commercial analytics services, while Matomo is an open source project that also provides enterprise services.
Piwik has been around since 2009. The first release under the new Matomo name will be version 3.3.0. A major 4.0 release is due this year, providing users with tools to help them comply with the General Data Protection Regulation, which comes into effect in May this year.
