Micron has gddr6 for video cards ready
Micron has completed the design and qualification of gddr6-vram and is in the process of producing samples. This puts the development of fast video memory on track for an introduction in the first half of 2018.
Micron reports on its blog that the final steps needed before gddr6 can go into production are ready. Initially, the company will produce gddr6 chips with bandwidths of 12Gbit/s and 14Gbit/s, but 16Gbit/s chips will be added at a later stage.
The company states that it has gained a lot of knowledge from the gddr5x production, which has some similarities with gddr6. Gddr5x performs at up to 12Gbit/s; Micron is already producing memory at this speed.
Micron announced at the beginning of this year that it aims to start production of gddr6 by the end of this year or early 2018. Midway through the year, the company announced that this would happen in the first half of 2018. Currently, the status of gddr6 at Micron is sampling.
Gddr6 not only has higher maximum bandwidths than gddr5 and gddr5x, but is also 20 percent more energy efficient than gddr5x.
