Sony will release Dolby Vision update for some more expensive TVs next month
Sony has announced that it is releasing an update for some of its more expensive televisions. This concerns an OLED model and a few LCD televisions. The update with Dolby Laboratories’ HDR standard will be available from the end of January 2018.
It concerns the Sony Bravia A1 OLED, ZD9 and XE94/E93 devices. Only the A1 is an OLED television; the other two models are LCD TVs. Sony announced in January 2017 during the CES fair to come with a firmware update that would add Dolby Vision. The TVs currently support HDR10 and Hlg.
Initially, this update was supposed to be available at the end of 2017, but it has now been delayed until mid- or late January, Forbes reports. This means that the update will gradually become available to users during February. The update will be released in both the US and Europe.
Dolby Vision offers a better HDR reproduction compared to HDR10, especially because dynamic metadata is used in Dolby Vision. This allows, for example, the contrast and brightness to be optimized per frame or per scene, instead of being static for the entire movie. Furthermore, Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color reproduction and a maximum brightness of 10,000 cd/m²; with hdr10 this goes up to 10-bit color reproduction and a maximum of 4,000 cd/m².
