Eve Tech Starts Delivery of Community Curated Surface Pro Competitor

Finnish Eve Tech has delivered the first copies of the Eve V, the 2-in-1 that the company is raising as an alternative to Microsoft’s Surface Pro. In the first reviews, the system compiled by community members comes out well.

Eve Tech will begin shipping the first Eve V models one year after hitting its $75,000 crowdfunding target on IndieGoGo. Eve Tech is a relatively modest manufacturer and the first limited edition of the device was already sold out, but a new batch of sales will start on December 4. It is not known how many copies are involved.

The company has provided some reviewers with a test model, which is a copy with Intel Core i7-7Y75, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. This is the second most expensive example, which is offered for 1649 euros. The Eve V should, among other things, distinguish itself with its Thunderbolt 3 port, with which the device can be connected to an external video card, so that it can run demanding games. In combination with a lower price than Microsoft’s competitor, according to the CEO, there must be a ‘Surface killer’, Neowin wrote earlier.

The Neowin reviewer believes the Eve V is “one of the best devices he’s ever used.” According to him, the device offers better specifications and a better user experience than most competitors, at a lower price. Lilliputing is also positive, although this site thinks that the cheaper models are sufficient for most users. The reviewer also notes that the keyboard cannot be kept clean.

According to Digital Trends, the Surface Pro wins on performance, stylus and keyboard, but the Eve V has better battery life. The screen quality would be comparable. The site mentions the Kaby Lake processor as a downside, because Kaby Lake R models are now available and Cannonlake chips at 10nm are on the way. Still, according to the site, the device meets expectations.

Eve Tech releases five different configurations, of which the cheapest with M3 processor costs 799 euros.
