Xbox One X supports native resolution of 1440p monitors
The Xbox One X also supports 1440p monitors. Until now, it was unclear whether Microsoft’s new console would support such native resolutions, partly because the Xbox One X focuses specifically on 4k resolution.
Kevin Gammil, a vice president of Microsoft’s Xbox division, said on Twitter that the Xbox One X supports the native resolution of a 1440p monitor via HDMI. On Reddit, among others, the question has long been whether the Xbox One X would also support 1440p monitors.
On Twitter, Gammil also said that if a game outputs a 1440p resolution, the image on a 4k television will be upscaled to a 2160p resolution. A TV with a full HD resolution uses super sampling so that the higher resolution is reduced to an appropriate 1080p resolution. It was previously speculated that the Xbox One X on a 1440p monitor would also serve up 1080p resolution via supersampling.
The latter is, for example, the case with Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro. When playing a 2160p or 1440p resolution game on this console on a 1440p monitor, the output resolution will be 1080p and the images will be upscaled. Because the images are not rendered in the higher resolution, the game looks less good on such monitors. The Xbox One X will be released on November 7.
