Google is considering adding more color rendering options to Pixel 2 XL
Google is considering adding more options for color reproduction on the Pixel 2 XL via a software update. The OLED screen on the smartphone received a lot of criticism in reviews because of matte colors and other problems with the display of colors and gray tones.
Google has set the screen to the sRGB color space and, according to the search giant, that ensures the display of more realistic, but less pronounced colors on the OLED screen. There is a ‘lively’ option, but it only provides a small boost. In a statement to Cnet, Google said it is looking at the possibility of adding other screen modes to the software.
The question is whether this measure will silence the criticism. Tech site The Verge shows examples in which the screen displays photos much too green and also gives a green haze over white icons. According to Ars Technica, the OLED screen also shows an uneven image at low brightness. At an angle, the OLED screen also shows a haze, something that Samsung OLED screens also had until a few years ago.
LG is the producer of the display in the Pixel XL 2. The manufacturer made OLED screens for phones a few years ago, which were also disappointing at the time. In recent years, LG has mainly focused on OLED screens for televisions. The Pixel 2 XL will be released next month in various European countries. Google presented the phone two weeks ago at its own event.
