Microsoft confirms recent Windows updates caused bsod issues
Microsoft has fixed an issue that caused boot issues and a blue screen of death for some Windows 10 users. The error was related to a “publishing problem” with two security updates from last Tuesday.
Messages about the problems with users appeared online on Wednesday and Thursday, but Microsoft did not respond to them earlier. Now the company admits to be aware of it. It concerned wsus and sccm users of Windows 10 with version numbers 1703 and 1607 and Windows Server 2016. The security updates KB4041676 and KB4041691 caused problems. Microsoft blames it on a “publishing problem,” without providing further details.
Consumers who get updates through Windows Update and business users who get updates through Windows Update for Business were not affected by the issue. Microsoft states that it has already fixed the problem with a cumulative update on October 10 and the company advises customers to implement it.
Administrators of wsus and sccm need to scan for updates again. For affected systems that have not yet had a reboot, the company is providing a workaround to remove the update queue. Systems that can no longer boot could be helped with Automatic Repair and System Restore by entering some commands in the command prompt. Microsoft provides details about this on its support page.
