Valve has announced new hardware and software for VR hardware makers to use in their products. For example, the company has developed special lenses that are suitable for LCDs and OLED screens in VR headsets.

In an announcement, Valve writes that the lenses support a field of view between 85 and 120 degrees, depending on the screen used. They should provide the user with a ‘better tracking experience’, in addition to increased sharpness and reduced light scattering. The lenses are suitable for use in headsets compatible with SteamVR. Valve offers the lenses in combination with the necessary calibration and correction software.

Valve has added the lenses to its SteamVR tracking page, which it put online last year when it announced its royalty-free licenses. The company did that to give hardware makers the ability to build peripherals for its SteamVR platform.

HTC and Valve’s tracking system uses a system called Lighthouse, which consists of one or more base stations and tracking sensors on moving objects. Valve introduced its second version of SteamVR tracking in the summer.
