Lenovo announces ‘retro laptop’ in celebration of ThinkPad 25th anniversary
On the occasion of ThinkPad’s 25th anniversary, Lenovo has released a laptop that has some of the features of the classic models, such as a seven-row keyboard and the colored logo.
The ThinkPad Anniversary Edition 25 is based on the ThinkPad T470, but modified with features from classic models in the business laptop line. There is a keyboard with seven rows of keys, including a classic blue enter key and special buttons for volume control. The colored ThinkPad logo also adorns the system.
Under the hood is modern hardware such as a Core i7-7500U and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX. The 14″ screen has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. Lenovo supplies the laptop in limited numbers in a limited number of countries for an amount of 1899 dollars, converted and with VAT that is 1959 euros. That is considerably more than what the ThinkPad T470 is for. It is not known in what numbers Lenovo will make the special version or whether it will be available in the Benelux.The introduction is part of the marketing campaign at the 25th anniversary of ThinkPad.
Update, 20.45: Lenovo announces that the ThinkPad Anniversary Edition 25 will not be available in the Benelux.
IBM introduced the first ThinkPads on October 5, 1992. The company had them manufactured in Japan. The 700C in particular stood out, with its 10.4″ TFT screen with 256 colors and a resolution of 480×640 pixels. A standout model in the ThinkPad series was the W700ds from 2009, with a 17″ screen and additional extendable 10 .6″ panel. The thin X1 Carbon ultrabook with a carbon housing was also a standout laptop in the series. The first version appeared in 2012. In 2004, Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad line from IBM. According to the company, there are more in total sold over 130 million units.
