Apple will release iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 on September 18. The company confirmed this on Tuesday evening during its Wonderlust keynote. Both software updates will then become available as free upgrades. MacOS Sonoma will follow on September 26.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be publicly available from Monday, September 18, after both operating systems were announced in June during WWDC 2023. iOS 17 will be available for the iPhone XR and XS and newer. iPadOS 17 will be available for tablets from the third generation iPad Air, sixth generation iPad, fifth generation iPad Mini and the iPad Pro from 2017.

Apple provides the two OSes with several new features. For example, iOS 17 gets a new standby mode when mounted horizontally on a stand, a new Journal app, and live transcriptions of voicemails in English. iPadOS 17 gets the updated lockscreen that Apple introduced for iPhones last year with iOS 16. The Health app is also coming to iPads and users will soon be able to edit PDF documents with the Apple Pencil.

MacOS 14, also known as macOS Sonoma, will follow about a week later. This desktop OS will be released on Tuesday, September 26. To install macOS 14, users must have at least a 2018 MacBook or Mac Mini. The OS also works on iMacs from at least 2019, iMac Pros from 2017, Mac Pros from 2019 or Mac Studios from 2022. All older models will not receive support for the new operating system.

Sonoma will get widgets on the desktop, among other things. There will also be a new game mode that should provide higher frame rates and improvements for video calling. macOS Sonoma was also announced in June during WWDC and had been available as beta for some time.
