Twitter reportedly plans to give the golden tick for free to the ten thousand most followed companies and five hundred largest advertisers. This is evident from internal documents that The New York Times has seen. Normally that check should cost a thousand dollars per month.

This concerns the 10,000 most followed companies that have already been verified, clarifies The New York Times. The reason for this exception is not stated. It is also not clear whether these companies and the five hundred largest advertisers will automatically receive a golden tick, or whether they will have to apply for it first. Companies that purchase such a checkmark are manually verified.

Twitter’s plan to charge companies $1,000 for the golden tick was leaked in February through a report by The Information. It is from March possible for companies to sign up for the Twitter Verified Organizations plan. The golden check mark can already be seen on a number of accounts, including Twitter itself. In addition to the thousand dollars, the social medium also charges fifty dollars for verification checks on related accounts. Companies that do not pay will automatically lose their verification check mark.
