Twitter lets users add fact-check labels to posted images
Twitter will now also give users the option to add a fact-check label to images if they believe the photo is misleading. The Community Notes function could previously only be used with a single tweet.
If users choose to post a Community Note with an image, if enough other users find the note helpful, it will automatically appear every time the same image is posted to Twitter. Twitter will let you know that the photo should be almost exactly the same, so if another user changes the photo slightly, there is a chance that the fact check comment will not be included. Twitter says it will broaden photo recognition in the future, but at the same time wants to continue to ensure that the labels are not placed on the wrong photos.
For the time being, there will only be a label for tweets with one photo, but the intention is that the functionality will later also work if there are multiple photos in a tweet. Community Notes should also become available for videos in the future. According to Twitter, the feature is intended to make other users aware of ‘misleading media’, such as AI-generated photos. The function has been available for individual tweets for a number of years now, for example to warn users of false information about Covid-19.
