Number of Mastodon users grows by more than two million in two months
The decentralized social network Mastodon has more than 2.5 million active users, compared to 300,000 in October, founder Eugen Rochko writes in a blog post. That’s an increase of more than 700 percent in two months.
At the beginning of November, Rochko announced that the platform had 600,000 active visitors. That was already a growth of 200,000 in a week, but in just a month came there another 1.9 million users. It is unclear what the total number of visitors currently is, as the platform has already reached the 2.5 million milestone “between October and November” according to Rochko.
The growth spurt started after Elon Musk completed the acquisition of Twitter at the end of October. Mastodon has some of the same functions and the same interface as that medium. The big difference is that Mastodon is decentralized and therefore works on many different servers. As a result, it is not in the hands of one company, which is the case with Twitter. Twitter had around 238 million users in its most recent quarterly figures. This means that Mastodon has just over 1 percent of the number of users on Twitter.
