Construction and management simulation game Factorio has now sold 3.5 million copies. The game had been in development since 2012 and first came out of Early Access in 2020.

The number of 3.5 million copies sold was achieved during last year’s Christmas holidays, writes developer Wube Software in a blog post. According to the company, sales numbers are still stable at 500,000 units per year.

Wube Software also reports that the release of the game on the Nintendo Switch went well and that 40,000 copies of the game were sold on this console, which is about as expected. The game seems to be very popular, especially in Japan; 40 percent of Switch sales take place in that country.

The developer says that he is busy eliminating bugs and crashes in the Switch version of Factorio. After that, Wube Software says it will focus on releasing controller support for PC and Steam Deck, followed by mouse and keyboard support for Switch. The company does not provide a timeline for these additions and asks for some patience.

The Wube Software update contains little concrete information about the major expansion that was announced in February 2021. The developer acknowledges that the blog post contains few details about this expansion and says that large parts of the gameplay are still being changed and adjusted, so there would be little point in talking about it now, because that information will quickly become outdated.

Factorio can be described as a construction and management simulation game. In the game, players must build a factory on a planet and defend it. The goal is to set up a large-scale industry to build a rocket to leave the planet.
