Chromebook shipments will drop by 48 percent in 2022
The number of deliveries of Chromebooks has fallen sharply in 2022 compared to the previous year. This is a decrease of 48 percent. At least that is what the International Data Corporation reports based on preliminary data from its Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.
The number of Chromebooks delivered fell by 48 percent in 2022, after a huge increase of 180.5 percent in 2021, writes Display Daily based on IDC data. If we focus purely on the past, fourth quarter of 2022, there were 3.6 million Chromebooks delivered. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, this is a decrease of 24.3 percent.
An IDC research associate says Chromebook shipments were in the doldrums for several quarters, but shipments are expected to return to normal growth rates as inventory builds up. However, it is expected that deliveries of Chromebooks outside the educational sector will remain difficult, given the economic downturn and possible alternatives such as tablets.
Decreased deliveries of Chromebooks affected all major manufacturers, such as Acer, Dell, Lenovo, HP and ASUS. Based on the figures, Acer supplied the most Chromebooks in 2022 with 4.2 million copies, a decline of 33.8 percent compared to 2021. Relatively speaking, the declines are much larger at HP and Lenovo. These two companies shipped the most Chromebooks in 2021 with 10.2 and 8.2 million units respectively, but that dropped to 3.5 and 3.7 million last year.
