‘Meta wants to release glasses with wristband control in 2025’
Meta wants to release three AR glasses in the coming years, according to an internal presentation. The first is a successor to existing glasses, the second adds a camera and control via a wristband. The third is ‘full’ AR glasses.
The glasses for next fall are a successor to the Ray Ban Stories glasses from 2021, writes The Verge. It is unclear what new functions the glasses would have compared to the first version. The second pair of glasses in 2025 will be able to, among other things, scan QR codes and display real-time translations in something Meta calls the ‘viewfinder’. This indicates that the glasses have a camera.
For input, these glasses have a wristband that users can use to make finger and hand movements. The software translates this into gestures that can be used in the software. The intention is to eventually use the wristband to make a keyboard possible that allows typing at the speed that is also possible on telephones, according to the company. In addition to a basic wristband, there will be an optional version that can serve as a smartwatch.
According to the presentation, the third glasses are full AR glasses that Meta has been working on as Orion for eight years. This should, among other things, enable the display of avatars in the real world. Meta would like to test this among employees from next year and it should be released in 2027. In the same presentation, Meta also talked about upcoming Quest headsets.
