Ubuntu 23.10, which will be released in October, does not use GIMP 3.0. The operating system will still have the old GIMP 2.10, because according to the developers, more work is required for the upgrade to version 3.0.

Canonical developer Jeremy Bícha writes in an email to developers that Ubuntu 23.10 continues to stick with the older version of the GNU Image Manipulation Program, which has been included with Ubuntu for many years. In 23.10, GIMP 2.10.34 is included and not GIMP 3.0. That version is not yet finalizedbut approaching the finish line.

Bícha explains that the transition to GIMP 3.0 takes a lot of work. “When I started this discussion, I didn’t realize that GIMP 3.0 represents a huge transition. No preparatory work has been done for that transition, so we’re sticking with GIMP 2.10.34.”
