WSJ: Meta releases web version of Threads this week
Meta plans to release a web version of X competitor Threads this week. Insiders report this to The Wall Street Journal. Meta previously said that a web version of the social media platform is in the works. Currently the service is only available via smartphone apps.
Meta is said to be planning to release the web version ‘early this week’, anonymous sources report to The Wall Street Journal. At the same time, these plans are not yet final and therefore can still change. With the web version, Threads will soon be available on the desktop. Currently, the service can only be used with apps for Android and iOS, although individual messages from the service can be viewed via web browsers.
We have been working on a web version of Threads for some time now. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri wrote recently that Meta has been testing an early version of it for a few weeks, but it still needs some work before it could be released. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on August 5 that the web version will be available “in the coming weeks,” along with a search function.
Meta released Threads a month and a half ago as a competitor to X, the former Twitter. The platform reached thirty million users on its first day. Within five days, the platform had 100 million users, although the number of active users has fallen in the weeks since. Threads is currently unavailable in the European Union as Meta is unsure whether the platform complies with EU laws.
