IDC and Canalys: Global tablet sales declined last quarter

According to the American analyst firm IDC, 29.9 percent fewer tablets were shipped worldwide in the second quarter of 2023. Canalys recorded 11 percent fewer sales. IDC writes that Chromebooks are also experiencing a decline, Canalys believes that sales remained stable.

IDC writes in its latest report that Apple shipped the most tablets last quarter: about 10.5 million units. Canalys keeps it at 12.3 million copies. However, according to IDC, the American company is doing 16.8% worse compared to the same period last year.

Samsung has shipped 5.8 million tablets, according to IDC. As a result, the South Korean company is performing 18.3% worse compared to the second quarter of 2022. According to Canalys Samsung sold approximately 6 million tablets during the previous quarter. Lenovo is the third best-selling tablet manufacturer, according to IDC. The Chinese company shipped about 2.1 million tablets last quarter, according to both research firms. That is approximately 39 percent less than the same period a year ago.

While IDC believes that approximately 1.8 percent fewer Chromebooks were sold last quarter compared to the second quarter of last year, Canalys says that global sales increased by 1 percent. According to Canalys, HP has sold the most Chromebooks and has a market share of 26.7 percent. During the second quarter of 2022, the US company reportedly had a market share of 16 percent.

Lenovo would follow closely with a market share of 22.9 percent. That market share was still 20.2 percent during the second quarter of last year. Dell, Acer and ASUS round out the top five Chromebook manufacturers. According to Canalys, they all recorded declining sales in this category compared to a year ago.
