Microsoft will add support for HDR wallpapers to Windows 11. The company is currently testing that functionality in a Windows 11 Insider Preview build. The feature will be available to all users later.

Microsoft is testing support for HDR backgrounds in Windows 11 Insider Preview build 25921, which is available in the Canary Channel. The feature allows users to set jxr files as desktop wallpaper, which will be fully rendered in HDR when users have an HDR monitor connected. On multi-screen systems, the background is displayed in HDR or SDR, depending on the capabilities of each individual monitor.

Users running Insider build 25921 can set an HDR wallpaper by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting ‘personalize’ and then pressing ‘wallpaper’. Users can then select a jxr image there and set it as the background image.

Additionally, users logged in with an Azure Active Directory account will see larger thumbnail previews for cloud files in the OS. It will also be possible to uninstall Cortana and Chat will be replaced by Microsoft Teams. It is not known when the features will be available to all users.
