Rumor: PlayStation 5 Pro will be released at the end of 2024
Sony has been working on a PlayStation 5 Pro since 2022, which should be released on the market in November 2024. That’s what insider Tom Henderson claims. The console’s GPU would have 60 compute units and a memory bandwidth of 18Gbps.
Henderson makes these claims on the keytogaming website. There he reports that Sony has been working on a Pro version of the PlayStation 5 since the beginning of last year. The company reportedly named the project ‘Trinity’. According to Henderson, the code name for the PlayStation 4 Pro was ‘Neo’ and that of the PlayStation VR was ‘Morpheus’. Henderson also believes that Sony is currently holding demonstration events and that developers can expect a PlayStation 5 Pro dev kit by the end of this year.
As for GPU performance, the insider writes that the PS5 Pro has 30 work group processors. Such a WGP is good for two compute units with AMD’s RDNA2 architecture. This would mean that the PS5 Pro would have 60 compute units. That is almost twice as much compared to the regular PlayStation 5 console, which has 36 computer units. The memory bandwidth of the video card would also be 18,000 megatransfers per second, or 18Gbps. On the PS5 it is 14Gbps. Henderson does not share more suspected technical details.
According to the insider, the PlayStation 5 Pro would enable better gameplay at 4k resolution. The console would also support a performance mode that aims for a resolution of 8k. The PS5 Pro would also support accelerated ray tracing. According to Henderson, Sony would like to release the game console in November 2024. The Japanese company has not yet responded to these rumors.
Tom Henderson is a well-known gaming industry insider who has also shared accurate information about Sony in the past. For example, the leaker previously shared early information about gaming monitors and headsets for PCs and the PS5. Henderson also reported in 2022 that Sony would come with a customizable controller, which later turned out to be true. Earlier this year, Henderson claimed that Sony is working on a PS5 with a removable disc tray. Sony would like to sell this variant from September.
