Reddit removes chat messages from before January 1, 2023 during migration

Reddit is in the process of deleting chat messages that users sent before January 1 this year. The platform is switching to a new chat platform and does not want to migrate all messages to the new platform.

Any chats before January 1 will not be available in Reddit’s chats interface, Mashable notes. Reddit had announced the move during an update in June, but did not explicitly say that chats would disappear. “To ensure a smooth and fast transition to this new infrastructure, we are migrating chat messages sent from January 1, 2023.”

For now, there are a few ways to consult old chat messages. It seems to work by looking at the messages Old.reddit.com. Users can also request their data to view the old messages. The chat messages will then remain unavailable on the regular web version of Reddit and in the app.
