GitHub enables passwordless login via passkeys in beta
GitHub enables passwordless login with passkeys. This allows users to add an authentication key to their device to log in securely.
This is still a preview for now, writes the company. The public beta is accessible to everyone. Users can use passkeys in addition to a standard username and password.
Passkeys are a new authentication standard that major tech companies are working on. They make it possible to create a key pair between an online service and the physical device they are on. This works the same as a YubiKey, for example, but instead of a physical key, the user can use a computer. More and more services have recently switched to this, including 1Password, Google and Bitwarden.
