‘Nvidia already used 12Vhpwr successor for the GeForce RTX 4070 FE’
Nvidia may already have been using a connector with the 12V-2×6 design for the GeForce RTX 4070 Founder Edition, instead of 12Vhpwr. This is what Igor Wallossek of the German website Igor’s Lab claims. He previously said that this successor will only be introduced as part of PCIe 6.0.
Igor Wallossek thinks that the GeForce RTX 4070 FE video card already uses the new connector, due to the four data pins on the bottom. On the 12V-2×6 they are placed further inwards, 1.7mm instead of 0.4mm, something he also sees on the 4070 FE. He also sees the new design on the custom MSI RTX 4070 Gaming X Trio variant, although the label still says 12VHPWR H+. While the newer version should be labeled H++. It is not clear why this new connector is apparently already being mass produced, while the design is apparently not yet ready.
Wallossek first reported the 12Vhpwr successor earlier this week based on leaked documents. Two of the four pins ensure the detection of the video card. Because they are placed further in, the video card will not turn on at all as long as those two data pins do not make contact. As a result, the video card will not function if the cable is not fully plugged in, which should prevent the common problems with melting 12Vhpwr connectors.
