A support page on Apple’s site reveals that users can only stream 4k content from the iTunes Store, not download it. This is only possible at a lower quality. Apple recently announced that full HD content from users will receive a free upgrade to 4k.

The related page, discovered by MacRumors, states that a full HD movie can be downloaded locally, as well as versions with HDR and Dolby Vision. That is not possible for 4k movies. For streaming, Apple recommends a download speed of at least 25Mbit/s. Apple devices will automatically lower the video quality if the connection speed is found to be insufficient.

MacRumors writes that users whose films and series have been upgraded can still download the full HD version. There is no price difference between full hd and 4k versions. Apple started adding higher quality content to its offering last week. This is related to the introduction of the new Apple TV 4k, the new media player that the company recently announced. The device can play 4k footage and supports the HDR standards HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

The company does not provide a reason for the difference in policy, according to MacRumors, the difference may be due to local storage limitations or licensing.
