MSI: Sixteen of our FreeSync monitors are compatible with Nvidia’s G-Sync

Manufacturer MSI states that sixteen of its own monitors that support FreeSync should also receive the G-Sync Compatible label. However, these MSI monitors are not yet on the Nvidia list of twelve Adaptive Sync monitors that the company says are good enough.

MSI says their monitors are “effectively G-Sync compatible” after Nvidia recently released new drivers to support FreeSync monitors. According to MSI, not all monitors on the market currently meet the G-Sync Compatible certification. The company says it has continuously tested its own Adaptive Sync monitors to see if they comply. Of the eighteen tested MSI monitors with Adaptive Sync, sixteen screens are good enough for the G-Sync Compatible label, according to MSI. The monitors that are not shown in the list are still being tested, according to MSI.

The manufacturer says that when testing the different screens, it has used three Nvidia video cards: the MSI RTX 2070 Ventus 8G, the MSI RTX 2080 Ventus 8G and the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming 8G. MSI probably used a system with Nvidia Geforce driver version 417.71, at least displayport 1.2 and Windows. MSI reports that there is still a limitation: multiple screens can be connected, but G-Sync only works with one monitor.

With the designation G-Sync Compatible it is possible to use G-Sync with a monitor that supports Adaptive Sync. Nvidia has certified twelve monitors with the designation ‘G-Sync Compatible’, although VESA’s Adaptive-Sync can also be used on FreeSync monitors that are not certified. The twelve certified monitors are game monitors with tn panels and a large FreeSync range. The list of sixteen MSI monitors also includes copies with VA panels. Nvidia announced at CES that it would support Adaptive-Sync.
