Tata tested two 360-degree cameras at Singapore Formula 1 race
Tata Communications, part of the Indian conglomerate Tata Group, tested two 360-degree cameras during the Formula 1 race in Singapore. The live 360-degree videos were completely synchronized with the normal live broadcast on the TV, according to Tata.
It was a proof of concept, which, according to Tata Communications, was successful. According to the company, this past weekend marked the first time that the live 360-degree videos were completely synchronized with the regular TV broadcast without delay. Tata states that until now, large-scale adoption of 360-degree videos has been hampered by a delay of about 30 seconds between what is seen in the video and what is shown on the regular TV broadcast.
Two special 360-degree cameras have been placed in Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit. One camera was positioned along the street circuit at the Anderson Bridge, while the other was placed in the pit lane. Tata eventually wants to make these images available to users, so that they can, for example, be in the middle of the action with VR glasses, for example.
The test looked at the capacity required to transmit the data of a 360-degree video. Because such videos contain much more footage than normal videos, significantly more data must be processed to eventually get the content to people’s homes without delay. When such images will eventually become available to users, Tata has not disclosed.
