Rumor: Nvidia is working on faster version of GTX 1070

According to TechPowerUp, Nvidia is working on a refresh of the GTX 1070. The new version is said to be faster, presumably due to an increase in the number of cudacores and faster memory. The GPU could also get higher clock speeds.

With a slightly faster GTX 1070, Nvidia may want to beat the AMD Vega 56, TechPowerUp says. That video card is slightly faster than the GTX 1070 and should have a comparable price. In practice, however, the Vega 56 is hardly for sale in the Benelux or only for more than the recommended retail price.

The new version of the GTX 1070 could get 2048 or more cudacores. The current model has 1920, but the laptop version already has 2048. The memory could also be upgraded to 9Gbit/s-gddr5 or even 10Gbit/s-gddr5x. TechPowerUp thinks the new card will approach the GTX 1080 by up to 90 percent in performance. That model would then be phased out, while the faster variant of the 1080 with 11Gbit/s memory will continue to exist.

On Wednesday, a rumor appeared that Nvidia would come with a GTX 1070 Ti. VideoCardz placed that on the basis of a photo, which contains a specification list with that product name. However, it could also be a typing error; there are no other concrete indications that indicate the arrival of a GTX 1070 Ti.

TechPowerUp notes that the rumor is not based on that photo, but on “reliable sources.” The new card would be available around the holidays. It is not clear what name the new GTX 1070 will be given. There is a chance that it is indeed a Ti version, but Nvidia previously released versions of its GTX 1060 and 1080 with faster memory, which only got a 9Gbit/s and 11Gbit/s designation in the name.
