Download Suse Linux 10.1 beta 8
The developers of the OpenSuse community have already released the eighth beta version of Suse Linux 10.1. The previous version, Suse Linux 10.0, added “OSS” to the title, which stood for Open-Source Software, indicating that all non-open-source components are not included. These include the Sun Java Runtime Environment, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Macromedia Flash Player, and components that depend on them, such as OpenOffice.org. With this version, that addition disappears again because there was confusion whether two flavors would become available, one with OSS and one without OSS designation. However, the non-open source components are not included with Suse Linux 10.1, they can be obtained separately from this location. The announcement on the mailing list looks like this:
I’m glad to announce SUSE Linux 10.1 Codename “Agama Lizard” Beta8. Please read the complete list or Known Issues at our website. For now let me just point out the following issues:
- RPM dump before update:
If you do an update, please create an XML dump of the RPM database BEFORE starting an update. Details are available here. - The Windows Domain Membership dialog (“Samba authentication”), when called during installation, is empty.
The distribution comes with 5 CDs. You need (on x86 and x86-64, I haven’t tested PPC):
- CD1 only for a minimal text installation (English)
- CDs 1-3 for a default KDE or GNOME installation in German or English
- All CDs for other selections
