VLC Media Player is an open source media player that can be used on a wide range of operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The player is able to play a large number of media formats without additional codecs, ranging from MPEG1, MPEG2 and VCD to various streaming protocols. The developers released a bug fix release of the 0.8.6 branch yesterday and labeled it as version 0.8.6b posted online in front of Linux (15MB), Windows (13MB) and Intel (14MB) and PowerPC Macs (13MB). VLC Media Player 0.8.6b includes new flash decoders and interface fixes for the Mac OS X version. What exactly has changed in the new VLC can be read below. From the feedback we have had so far on the latest version of VLC media player, 0.8.6a, we are proud to introduce a new bugfix release, namely 0.8.6b, aimed at fixing some annoying bugs. But with a few improvements too. It includes a new teletext subtitles decoder, new flash video decoders and Mac OS X interface improvements. It fixes many crashes, especially during fullscreen on Mac OS X, on Vista and the browser plugin.

Various bug fixes notably:

  • out of bound read in demuxers
  • demuxers crashes (incl. CVE-2007-0256)
  • Mac OS X Interface crashes
  • VP31 decoding on Windows platforms

decoders:

  • Enhanced Flash Video support incl. VP61 and VP60
  • Teletext subtitles (telx) support

Web Browser Plugins:

  • rectified behavior and improved usability

Mac OS X Interface & Port:

  • various usability improvements
  • new wizard option to include subtitles
  • screensaver/automatic sleep mode is enabled when a video is paused
  • Improved Delete Preferences Script
